Christmas is just around the corner and it's time to start plotting out your gifts. Too often, gifts are chosen for "cuteness," or are seasonal gifts that can only be used once a year. Does anyone really want another fruitcake? However, there is an interesting alternative - "Blokus Classic."
This isn't the typical fad board game, that is great for a few games, but then grows monotonous. It is a growing craze around the world because it is unique, engaging, educational, fun, competitive, strategic, etc...
Baby dolls and toy cars are good Christmas gifts for a child. However, neither of these Christmas gifts serve to spur imagination, or critical thinking skills. The toys will not allow for the family to engage together. Jane will be in her corner with her baby doll. Joe will be making tire tracks all over the place with his toy car. On the other hand, "Blokus Classic" will allow all the children to play together. But, the game takes it a step further by keeping the game simple enough for a child, while simultaneously challenging enough for an adult. Not many games can tout that.
"Blokus" has won over 20 awards; including the Mensa Select award, and the 2004 Teacher's Choice Award. The game is praised for creating healthy brain activity. Through strategy, the game promotes learning and promotes creative thinking skills. Players will form images in their mind, as to how to play their pieces. The overall goal is to figure out how to fit all the pieces onto the board.
The game and rules are simple, but as the game progresses it becomes more challenging. "Blokus Classic" comes with: a square board comprised of 400 squares and 84 geometrical pieces, that are made up of different amounts of small squares. The pieces are in four different colors. Each player starts at one of the boards four corners. Blue, yellow, red, and then green pieces will be played. As each new piece is placed, it must touch another piece of the same color on corners, but not on the sides. The play continues until no one can place anymore pieces on the board. The object is to place all, or as many, pieces as you can on the board. Points are calculated by how many pieces were placed, and left. Bonus points are awarded if all the pieces were played, and/or the last piece played was the single square game piece.
It is hours of fun and excitement. Plus, the game never ends or is played the same way; making each outcome different and uncertain. Careful thought is paid to where each piece is played and when.
Despite the simplistic rules and basis of the Blokus Classic, it is still a great Christmas gift for an adult. Transform new friends into good friends... or good friends into better friends. This is the Christmas gift that opens the door for an friendly adult game night. A fruitcake is not going to do that!
